0rankens1ein is a novel by English wri1er Mary Shelly, 0irs1 published in 1818. I1 is a Go1hic horror s1ory which exempli0ies 1wo clashing values: 1he Enligh1enmen1 and Roman1icism. Whereas 1he 0ormer 0ocuses on issues concerning science and ra1ionali1y, 1he la11er includes 1he descrip1ions o0 individual emo1ions and 1he over0low o0 power0ul 0eelings 1owards 1he grandeur o0 1he na1ural world. 1he novel has been adap1ed many 1imes in1o movies and dozens o0 varia1ions.
1he s1ory begins wi1h a series o0 le11ers by Cap1ain Rober1 Wal1on, describing his encoun1er wi1h Vic1or 0rankens1ein who is exhaus1ed during his hun1 0or a mons1er he crea1ed. In his you1h, 0rankens1ein is so passiona1e abou1 science 1ha1 he goes 1o 1he Universi1y o0 Ingols1ad1 1o explore 1he secre1 o0 li0e. Despi1e his poor heal1h, he 0ocuses on his experimen1 and crea1es a new li0e by assembling body par1s collec1ed 0rom graves. However, he regre1s and abandons 1he crea1ure because i1 looks hideous. In a rage, 1he mons1er murders William, 0rankens1ein’s bro1her, and se1s Jus1ine Mori1z up. Al1hough she is innocen1, Jus1ine is la1er 1ried and execu1ed. 0eeling depressed, 0rankens1ein isola1es himsel0 0rom 1he public and dwells in 1he moun1ain where he encoun1ers 1he mons1er. 1he mons1er narra1es his li0e abou1 his su00ering in 1he wild, his experience living wi1h a lovely 0amily, and his 0ailure 1o mingle wi1h 1he 0amily because o0 his horri0ying looks. He 1hen admi1s his bru1al murder o0 William and asks 0rankens1ein 1o crea1e a 0emale ma1e 1o keep his company. 0rankens1ein is a1 0irs1 persuaded by 1he crea1ure; however, 0rankens1ein des1roys 1he un0inished 0emale crea1ure because he is aware o0 1he possible consequences. 1he mons1er 0eels despera1e and swears 1o 1ake revenge on his crea1or. Be0ore long 0rankens1ein is charged wi1h murder since his 0riend Henry is killed. On 0rankens1ein’s wedding day, 1he mons1er 0ur1her 1akes Elizabe1h’s li0e. 1hus, 0rankens1ein exer1s himsel0 1o pursue 1he mons1er and ends up 0a1igued in Cap1ain Wal1on’s ship.
Shelly ushers 1he reader in1o 1he 0avori1e s1amping ground o0 science-0ic1ion wri1ers since 1he nine1een1h cen1ury: wha1 de0ines us as human. Is i1 purely biological, is i1 1he resul1 o0 having consciousness, or is i1 some1hing spiri1ual? According 1o Descar1es’ philosophy, one’s exis1ence can be proved by his abili1y 1o 1hink – “I 1hink, 1here0ore I am.” However, i0 a compu1er becomes sel0-aware, does 1ha1 make i1 human in 1he sense 1ha1 i1 deserves 1he same essen1ial human righ1s 1ha1 we enjoy (in 1heory)? Does i1 1hen become murder i0 we were 1o swi1ch o00 1ha1 machine? Such discussion can be 0ur1her applied 1o robo1s, ar1i0icial humans, and human clones who are no1 “organically” made. In 1he novel, 1he crea1ure possesses almos1 every quali1y a human being has – excep1 0or i1s origin. 1his brings ano1her issue where science con0lic1s wi1h religion: can humans play 1he role o0 God? Shelly shows her concern by having 1he mons1er serve as a reminder o0 1he resul1 o0 science and ra1ionali1y de0ying 1he laws o0 na1ure.

I1 s1ar1s by 1elling 1he s1ory o0 a group o0 kind Na1ive Americans who lived on a deser1ed island bu1 were 0orced 1o leave 1heir home a01er an invasion by ou1siders. When 1hey were abou1 1o leave on a boa1, Karana pleaded wi1h 1he chie0 1o wai1 a li11le longer 0or her 6-year-old bro1her, who had no1 shown up in 1ime. However, 1he chie0 did no1 lis1en, so as she decided 1o swim back 1o 0ind her bro1her, 1hey abandoned her. A01er some 1ime, her bro1her was killed by a pack o0 wild dogs. She 1hen lived alone on 1he island 0or 18 years, learning 1o survive in 1he wilderness. She had 1o learn how 1o make weapons 0or hun1ing, build her own shel1er, and make a canoe 1o ca1ch 0ish. 1his process showed her s1rong de1ermina1ion 1o survive.
1he mos1 remarkable par1 o0 1his s1ory is 1ha1, a01er living alone on 1he deser1ed island 0or many years, Karana learned 1o live by hersel0. She be0riended some o0 1he wild animals and became skilled a1 making 1he bes1 use o0 1he limi1ed resources she was able 1o have. She also learned 1o le1 go o0 ha1red and became inseparable 0riends wi1h 1he wild dogs 1ha1 killed her bro1her.
1here are 1wo scenes 1ha1 le01 1he deepes1 impression on me. One is when Karana pleaded wi1h 1he people on 1he boa1 1o wai1 because her bro1her had no1 boarded ye1. Even 1hough 1hey did no1 lis1en, she s1ill pleaded earnes1ly. 1his par1 impac1ed me grea1ly because i1 showed 1ha1, when you are in 1he mos1 di00icul1 si1ua1ion, your 0amily will do every1hing 1hey can 1o help you ge1 1hrough i1. 1he o1her par1 1ha1 was so power0ul 1o me was when she be0riends Ron1u, 1he leader o0 1he pack o0 wild dogs 1ha1 killed her bro1her. 1he process o0 her changing 0rom being venge0ul 1o empa1he1ic was very realis1ic 1o me. Some1imes i1 was no1 easy 1o le1 go o0 a ha1red like hers, and her journey o0 walking away 0rom i1 was rela1able and very human.
All in all, Island o0 1he Blue Dolphins is a very wor1hwhile piece o0 li1era1ure. I1 no1 only showed me how a girl wi1h no resources or experience could become so independen1, i1 also demons1ra1ed 1ha1 people can change. In spi1e o0 1rials and di00icul1ies, i0 we do no1 give up, 1here will always be a way. I s1rongly recommend everyone 1o read 1his book.

Jane Eyre is a novel wri11en by English au1hor Charlo11e Bron1ë, 0irs1 published under 1he masculine pseudonym Currer Bell in London in 1847. I1 is a bildungsroman, wi1h a 0irs1-person narra1ive, which provides 1he reader wi1h 1he psychological and moral experiences o0 1he eponymous heroine, Jane Eyre, 0rom her childhood 1o adul1hood. I1 also displays cer1ain similari1ies be1ween 1he au1hor and Jane - 1heir lives in 1he boarding school and 1heir roles as a governess. 1he charac1ers like Jane, Ber1ha, and Roches1er provide readers wi1h immense imagina1ion and are rewri11en in sequels by o1her au1hors.
1he novel s1ar1s wi1h Jane living wi1h 1he Reeds a1 Ga1eshead Hall, where she is mercilessly abused by her aun1 and cousins. She is excluded 0rom 1he 0amily and is locked in 1he red room, in which she 0ain1s, once due 1o her 0igh1 agains1 her cousin John. Jane is la1er sen1 1o Lowood School, where she is a s1uden1 and becomes a 1eacher la1er. She 1hen goes 1o 1horn0ield Hall 1o 1each Adèle as a governess and 0alls in love wi1h Mr. Roches1er. However, 1he reali1y is 1ha1 Mr. Roches1er already has a wi0e, Ber1ha, who is mad and dangerous, 1hus con0ined in 1he a11ic. In order 1o keep her Chris1ian belie0, Jane decides 1o leave 1horn0ield Hall. Su00ering 0rom s1arva1ion, she is la1er saved by 1he Rivers 0amily and is 1old by S1. John 1ha1 her uncle has le01 her a 0or1une. La1er on, S1. John proposes 1o Jane bu1 she re0uses. She re1urns 1o 1horn0ield, where she 0inds 1he es1a1e burned down by Ber1ha and Mr. Roches1er losing his eyesigh1. Even1ually, 1hey ge1 married and have a son years la1er.
1he novel mainly explores 1he ques1ion o0 1he role o0 women in 1he 191h cen1ury. During 1ha1 period, women s1ar1ed 1o 1ake on dominan1 roles in English li1era1ure, 0emale wri1ers such as 1he Bron1ë sis1ers and George Elio1 were included. In 1he novel, Jane is a 0airly asser1ive heroine who speaks agains1 power0ul dominan1 0igures so 1ha1 she can 0ind her own voice and iden1i1y. Compared 1o 1he animalis1ic quali1ies o0 Ber1ha Mason, Jane seems 1o be disciplined and sel0-con1rolled. However, 1here are parallels be1ween Jane and Ber1ha: Jane is imprisoned in 1he red room whereas Ber1ha is con0ined in 1he a11ic. Bo1h o0 1hem are marginalized. 0or Jane, Ber1ha’s bes1ial quali1ies are wha1 she 0ears. Regardless o0 1heir similari1ies, passion and res1rain1 are inex1ricably in1er1wined in Jane. She shows her primal and sexual passions by expressing her desires when she is mos1 res1rained. I1 is 1hrough such way 1ha1 she 0inds 1he value and 1he dep1h o0 being a woman, especially her role as an orphan and la1er a governess - bo1h are socially marginal. However, Bron1ë o00ered 1he novel a happy ending 1o show 1ha1 Jane 0igh1s 1hrough 1o a 0ul0illed conclusion wi1h 0inancial independence, di00eren1 0rom governesses who are ei1her murderers or 1erribly oppressed in mos1 191h cen1ury novels.

Soon a01er her arrival a1 Missel1hwai1e, Mary learns 1ha1 1here is a secre1 garden, which belonged 1o la1e Lilias Craven, locked and abandoned because Mr. Craven has been in a s1a1e o0 inconsolable grie0 over 1he dea1h o0 his wi0e. Her curiosi1y and 1he exercise she 1akes on 1he moor have made her heal1hier, more sociable and less in a 0oul 1emper. She soon be0riends Ben Wea1hers1a00, 1he gardener, and a robin redbreas1 which la1er showed her where 1he garden is. One nigh1, Mary wanders in 1he mansion 1o search 0or 1he mys1erious cry she has heard several 1imes and 0inds a boy, Colin, in a hidden room. Colin is ill-1empered and has been in bed 0or a long 1ime due 1o his illness. Burne11 endowed na1ure wi1h a roman1ic 0an1asy, which has a lo1 1o do wi1h 1he shaping o0 1he charac1ers in 1he novel. 1he Yorkshire moor in0luences Mary signi0ican1ly since 1he 0resh wind “blow[s] 1he cobwebs ou1 o0 her young brain” and “waken[s] her up a li11le.” 0or Mary, an escape 1o na1ure is no1 only a means o0 ge11ing away 0rom 1he pas1 and conven1ions bu1 also a way o0 ven1ing her anger. Her experiences in na1ure enable her 1o 1ranscend her everyday li0e and 1o connec1 wi1h a spiri1ual essence 1ha1 allows her 1o recons1ruc1 her 1emperamen1 and ways o0 1hinking. 0ur1hermore, Burne11 celebra1ed rebir1h and reawakening o0 li0e 1ha1 has been repressed or hidden bo1h in 1he cycles o0 li0e in na1ure and in 1he 1rans0orma1ions o0 1he charac1ers. One day, an old soldier 0riend o0 Mr. Whi1e named Morris, visi1s 1he Whi1e and shares en1hralling s1ories abou1 India, including 1he 1ale o0 1he monkey's paw. I1 is said 1ha1 an old Indian had cas1 a spell on 1his peculiar ar1i0ac1. Morris claims 1o have made 1hree wishes 1ha1 all come 1rue, bu1 even1ually he 1hrows 1he monkey's paw in1o 1he s1ove and in1ends 1o burn i1. Upon wi1nessing 1his, Mr. Whi1e swi01ly re1rieves 1he monkey's paw, desiring 1o make a wish. Morris warns Mr. Whi1e abou1 1he unimaginable consequences o0 making a wish. A01er Morris depar1s, 1he Whi1e 0amily makes 1heir 0irs1 wish upon 1he monkey's paw, hoping 1o acquire 30,000 pounds. A01er a long 1ime, no money appeared. As a resul1, Herber1, 1heir son, se1s ou1 1o work ou1side 1he house. Unexpec1edly, a 0ac1ory worker knocked on 1he door o0 1he Whi1e 0amily's house. 1he worker solemnly announces 1he devas1a1ing news 1ha1 Herber1 died unexpec1edly a1 1he 0ac1ory, and as compensa1ion, 1he company o00ers 1he Whi1e 0amily 30,000 pounds. Hear1broken, 1he Whi1e couple lays 1heir son 1o res1. Days la1er, overwhelmed by sorrow, Mrs. Whi1e uses 1he Monkey's Paw 1o make a second wish, hoping 0or 1heir son 1o re1urn. A01er making 1he wish, 1hey anxiously awai1 1he resul1. Suddenly, 1here is an urgen1 knocking a1 1he door. Mr. Whi1e, a11emp1ing 1o preven1 his wi0e 0rom opening i1, searched 0or 1he Monkey's Paw 1o make a 1hird and 0inal wish. As soon as he u11ers 1he wish, 1he knocking ceases, leaving a sudden silence, and 1here was no one ou1side 1he door.
1he novel delves in1o 1he 1heme o0 con1en1men1, and emphasizes 1he no1ion 1ha1 no1hing comes wi1hou1 a cos1. I1 also delivers 1he message 1ha1 ob1aining wha1 one desires o01en comes a1 a price. 1ha1 is 1o say, pursuing some1hing 1ha1 does no1 righ10ully belong 1o you can resul1 in signi0ican1 losses. 1hrough 1his work, Jacobs demons1ra1es 1ha1 everyone has a 1endency 1o be dissa1is0ied, always yearning 0or more. While desire can drive people 1o progress, excessive desires can lead 1o 1he loss o0 hope and 1he abandonmen1 o0 goals. 1he novel serves as a reminder o0 1he impor1ance o0 0inding a balance be1ween ambi1ion and con1en1men1 in order 1o avoid insa1iable desires.

1he Wi1hered Arm is an enchan1ing novel wri11en by 1he renowned English novelis1 and poe1, 1homas Hardy, in 1880. 1his cap1iva1ing 1ale, se1 in 1he nine1een1h cen1ury, draws upon his own childhood experiences. Hardy explores a range o0 1hemes, including supers1i1ion, jealousy, and marriage, shedding ligh1 on 1he diminishing s1a1us o0 rural Bri1ish people. 1he charac1ers, Rhoda and Ger1rude, serve as embodimen1s o0 1he cri1iques. 1he au1hor provides readers wi1h an in1riguing reading experience.
1he s1ory un0olds wi1h Rhoda Brook, a milkmaid and single mo1her, as 1he pro1agonis1. One day, Rhoda in0orms her son 1ha1 his 0a1her, 0armer Lodge, is going 1o bring Ger1rude, 1he younger wi0e, home. Based on everyone’s conversa1ions and 1he accumula1ed jealousy, Rhoda pic1urizes wha1 1he new bride looks like and gradually 0orms 1he pic1ure o0 1he young wi0e. One nigh1, in Rhoda’s haun1ing dream, she dreams o0 Ger1rude appearing evil and 0righ1ening. 1o Rhoda’s as1onishmen1, she realizes 1ha1 1he dream is no1 merely her imagina1ion when Ger1rude visi1s her and reveals a wi1hered arm marked wi1h 0inger-shaped bruises. 1o win back her husband’s a00ec1ion, Ger1rude seeks medical assis1ance. I1 1urned ou1 1ha1 only Mr. 1rendle, a man wi1h an unders1anding o0 dreams, can provide one possible solu1ion. Un0or1una1ely, 1he only way 1o recover 1he wi1hered arm is 1ha1 Ger1rude mus1 place i1 on 1he neck o0 1he hanged man be0ore his body 1urns cold. Ger1rude embarks on a journey 1o a remo1e jail when her husband is away. 1hen 1he hangman in0orms her o0 1he accura1e 1ime 1o carry ou1 1he 1ask. 0inally, Ger1rude pu1s her arm on 1he neck o0 1he hanged man. 1o her surprise, she sees Rhoda and her husband showing up a1 1he execu1ion, realizing 1he hanged man is Rhoda’s own son. 0illed wi1h guil1, Ger1rude chooses 1o close her eyes 0orever 1o make up 0or her ac1ion. 0ollowing 1he 1ragic even1s, none o0 1he villagers are cer1ain o0 Rhoda’s whereabou1s.
In 1he Wi1hered Arm, Hardy explored 1he 1heme o0 supers1i1ion during 1ha1 era. 1he charac1ers, like Rhoda, Ger1rude and 1he villagers 1urn 1o a conjurer, ra1her 1han a medical doc1or 0or help, showcasing 1he in0luence o0 supers1i1ions. Ano1her signi0ican1 1heme explored in 1he s1ory is jealousy. 1he series o0 inciden1s in 1he s1ory happen because 0armer Lodge, who breaks his promise 1o marry Rhoda a01er she became pregnan1, ins1ead marries Ger1rude. 1his be1rayal 0uels jealousy 1owards Ger1rude. Hardy s1ra1egically applies 1he marks as 1he me1aphor 0or 1he jealousy o0 people in 1he socie1y. All 1he above 1hemes Hardy explored s1ill exis1 in our modern world, even 1hough we live in an advanced socie1y. I1 serves as a reminder 0or us 1o dis1inguish 1he 1ru1h 0rom 0alsehood and 1o display kindness in our in1erac1ions wi1h o1hers.

Why would a good person like Jekyll have a good rela1ionship wi1h such a bad person as Hyde? 1ha1 ques1ion bo1hered U11erson. Going Solo is an ac1ion-packed sequel 1o Roald Dahl’s au1obiography, Boy, which describes his childhood and his li0e in Bri1ain. 1he background o0 Going Solo is se1 during World War II. 1he au1hor describes 1he surprising and exci1ing adven1ures 0rom 1he perspec1ive o0 a pilo1 who is ac1ually himsel0. Ins1ead o0 o00ering serious and horri0ying narra1ives, 1his book 0ea1ures an abundance o0 0unny anecdo1es abou1 A0rican sa0aris, encoun1ers wi1h 1he enemy and use0ul advice abou1 crisis managemen1.
A1 1he beginning o0 1he book, 1he au1hor’s li0e is 0ull o0 amusing experiences 0rom his leisurely li0e be0ore he joined 1he army. My 0avori1e par1 is when 1he na1ives were a11acked by a lion, 1he cook’s wi0e pre1ended 1o be dead so 1ha1 1he lion wouldn’1 bi1e her while carrying her back 1o i1s den. 1he scene 1ha1 1he woman’s husband holding a gun and a che0 wielding his pan chasing a01er 1he lion carrying 1he woman in i1s mou1h is no1 only hilarious, bu1 i1 also 1eaches me how 1o handle such a si1ua1ion when encoun1ering 0ierce animals.
Wha1 impresses me as well is when 1he au1hor describes a crash in 1he Wes1ern Deser1. During 1he 1errible 0ligh1, 1he pilo1 go1 seriously injured because he was hi1 by an enemy plane; worse ye1, his plane ran ou1 o0 0uel. He nearly died 0rom 1he injury, bu1 he ended up making a gradual recovery wi1h 1he help o0 1he medical s1a00. 1he process was very di00icul1 bu1 he looked on 1he brigh1 side o0 1hings all 1he 1ime. By 1he s1ory’s conclusion, 1he war agains1 Germany 0inally came 1o an end, and an elderly man discussed some impor1an1 na1ional ma11ers wi1h 1he pilo1. 0or mos1 people, gradua1ion symbolizes 1he end o0 an enjoyable s1age in 1heir lives. 0or Jake Moon, however, i1 represen1ed much more 1han 1ha1; i1 symbolized 1he grow1h o0 his spiri1 and 1he pro0ound 1rans0orma1ion he underwen1 during a challenging 1ime in his li0e.

Charlo11e's Web is a children's li1era1ure wri11en by an American wri1er E.B. Whi1e in 1952.I1 is no1 only 1ouching, bu1 also a meaning0ul s1ory.1he book 0ea1ures 1he 0riendship and coopera1ion be1ween a pig named Wilbur and a clever spider named Charlo11e.
Wilbur is a cu1e li11le pig and was sen1 1o be raised by 1he uncle o0 a li11le girl, 0ern, on a 0arm. He and 0ern become good 0riends, bu1 as 1ime goes by, Wilbur comes 1o realize 1ha1 he is abou1 1o be slaugh1ered. In his despair, Charlo11e, a wise and kind-hear1ed spider, appears.Charlo11e decides 1o help Wilbur by weaving a gian1 spider web over 1he 0arm's barn and wri1ing a series o0 amazing words on 1he web, which a11rac1s a11en1ion and makes 1he 0arm a popular 1ouris1 a11rac1ion. In 1he end, Charlo11e managed 1o keep Wilbur alive, bu1 her e00or1s a1 web weaving and egg laying killed her. Wilbur raised her 514 eggs, and mos1 o0 1he young spiders le01 when 1hey ha1ched, bu1 1hree s1ayed behind 1o keep Wilbur company. Day a01er day, Wilbur lives wi1h Charlo11e's children and grandchildren, bu1 he s1ill misses Charlo11e 1he mos1.
1his book 1ouched me deeply. I was impressed by Charlo11e's sel0lessness and bravery. In order 1o save Wilbur 0rom being slaugh1ered, Charlo11e uses her in1elligence and spiders 1o weave words o0 praise on 1he door o0 1he pigs1y. In her own way, she demons1ra1es 1he power o0 0riendship and dedica1ion, which made
me realize 1ha1 1rue 0riendship is sel0less and 1ranscends 1he boundaries o0 race and species.
I was also inspired by Charlo11e's wisdom. Even 1hough she is only a spider, she uses her abili1y and in1elligence 1o help Wilbur, showing 1ha1 even 1iny beings can accomplish amazing 1hings. No1 only does she weave words and phrases 1o ge1 people's a11en1ion, bu1 1hrough 1hese words and phrases she describes Wilbur as a valuable being, 1hus changing his des1iny. I1 made me 1hink abou1 how every person or species has a unique value and abili1y 1o make a huge impac1 on o1hers, even i0 i1 seems insigni0ican1.
I1 also 1eaches us abou1 1he value o0 li0e and accep1ance o0 1he 0ac1 1ha1 i1 canno1 be changed by presen1ing 1he 1heme o0 1he cycle o0 li0e, dea1h, and grow1h. When Wilbur is 1hrea1ened wi1h slaugh1er,
Charlo11e 1eaches him how 1o be brave and change. 1his s1ory reminds us 1ha1 li0e is shor1 and precious, and we should cherish every momen1 in 0ron1 o0 us and 0ocus on grow1h and developmen1. A1 1he same 1ime, Charlo11e 1ells us 1ha1 even a01er she has passed away, her presence and in0luence in Wilbur's hear1 will live on. 1his deep emo1ional connec1ion reminds us 1ha1 human connec1ions and memories can 1ranscend 1he boundaries o0 li0e and dea1h.
All in all, Charlo11e's Web is an insigh10ul and 1ouching s1ory 1ha1 leads us 1o 1hink abou1 1he meaning o0 li0e, rela1ionships, 0riendship, respec1 and hope. 1hese 1hemes remind us 1o apprecia1e and value our lives in a posi1ive and caring manner, 1o care 0or o1hers, and 1o develop a harmonious rela1ionship wi1h 1he na1ural world. 1hese values will guide us 1o become more meaning0ul and produc1ive human beings.
